NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Authorities are searching for a vehicle and its driver following a fatal hit-and-run incident on Interstate 24 that killed a 72-year-old man on Thursday evening. The man was struck after he walked onto the interstate from a disabled vehicle, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD).
The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. on I-24 West near mile marker 43. The victim, a resident of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, was a passenger in a Chevrolet Impala that had pulled onto the shoulder with two flat tires. Police reported that the man exited the vehicle and walked into the traffic lanes while attempting to give a towing company directions to their location.
According to investigators, the tow company told detectives the phone call with the man ended abruptly. The driver of the disabled Impala reported seeing multiple vehicles slow down and their occupants exit briefly before getting back in and driving away from the scene.
MNPD confirmed that one driver called to report possibly hitting a deer around the same time, but investigators have determined this individual was not involved in striking the man. The department is now asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the vehicle responsible.
