In a disturbing incident, three birds were discovered with BB gun bullets lodged in their bodies, prompting immediate intervention at a Miami rescue center.
The birds, including a pelican, a red-shouldered hawk, and a turkey vulture, were found injured and brought to the Pelican Seabird Station for treatment. Veterinarian Dr. Renata Schneider performed an emergency surgery on the pelican to remove a pellet lodged in its spine. Despite her efforts, the pelican suffered from additional health complications, leading to its unfortunate death. “He lost use of his legs over time, and then it just became impossible to eat,” Dr. Schneider explained. This incident highlights the severe impact of BB gun injuries on wildlife.
The turkey vulture, which had a pellet removed from its neck area, is reportedly recovering under the care of the non-profit organization. Meanwhile, the red-shouldered hawk faced a more severe situation with multiple hits that resulted in a broken femur. However, the hawk is currently on the path to recovery.
Dr. Schneider emphasized the cruelty of using BB guns on animals, stating, “It’s a long, slow death for these animals if they’re not brought to us. There are more humane ways to deter birds without causing them harm.” Under Florida law, shooting birds with BB guns is considered animal cruelty, a felony offense.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has been notified of these cases, suggesting potential investigations to address these acts of cruelty. This effort to hold perpetrators accountable serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting wildlife.
