A fatal boating accident occurred Friday night in the Florida Keys, claiming the life of a 24-year-old woman from North Carolina.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the incident involved a 21-foot Century Bay Boat colliding with an anchored sailboat. The force of the impact led to all four individuals aboard the motorboat being thrown into the water in Buttonwood Sound.
Sydney Cole, the victim from Fuquay Varina, was reportedly onboard the motorboat during the crash. Despite rescue efforts by the U.S. Coast Guard, which successfully aided three other injured individuals, the search for Cole culminated tragically. Her body was eventually located, although the circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation as of Saturday.
The multi-agency search for Cole involved the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the National Park Service, and deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. These teams worked in collaboration to address the emergency and piece together events leading up to this unfortunate accident.
The incident has cast a shadow over the holiday period in the Florida Keys. As investigations continue, further details are awaited to provide clarity on what led to this tragic incident.
