Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony was sworn in for his second term after securing re-election in November, amidst a backdrop of both achievement and controversy.
Dr. Gregory Tony’s tenure as the 17th sheriff of Broward County began in 2019 when he was appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis. This appointment came after the dismissal of his predecessor, Scott Israel, due to alleged mishandling of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy. Dr. Tony’s career in law enforcement started in 2005 with the Coral Springs Police Department, where he served on the SWAT team and rose to sergeant, bringing valuable experience in handling narcotics, burglary apprehension, and street intelligence among others.
In 2016, driven by a commitment to public service and an acute awareness of global active shooter incidents, Dr. Tony left the Coral Springs Police Department to establish Blue Spear Solutions. This firm focuses on providing active shooter training and mass casualty response to public and private sectors globally. As he stepped into the role of sheriff in Broward County, Tony prioritized modernizing and enhancing safety measures through community-oriented policing and advanced training programs. His leadership oversees a massive operation, with 5,800 employees, including certified deputies and fire rescue professionals, and an operating budget nearing $1 billion.
Dr. Tony’s approach has been both progressive and practical, focusing on technologies like the Real Time Crime Center and initiatives aimed at community integration and transparency. However, his time as sheriff has not been without difficulties. A significant issue arose following a 2022 Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) report that revealed inconsistencies in Dr. Tony’s police application forms. These included failing to disclose a fatal shooting incident from his youth, which was judged as self-defense, and other discrepancies such as previous LSD use and a suspended driver’s license that were omitted in applications.
Despite these findings, he faced no criminal charges due to statute limitations. FDLE suggested a six-month suspension of his law enforcement certification, but an administrative judge recommended a written reprimand, ethics training, and an 18-month probationary status instead. Dr. Tony has continued to emphasize the positive changes and developments under his leadership, aiming to strengthen community ties and enhance public safety across Broward County.
As Dr. Gregory Tony steps into his second term as Broward County Sheriff, he continues to face the challenges of leading a major law enforcement agency while working to implement his vision of a safer, more integrated community.
