In a multi-vehicle accident on the Howard Frankland Bridge on Friday morning, two individuals were hospitalized following a chain-reaction collision during rush hour.
The incident involved five vehicles traveling on the southbound lanes of the bridge early in the morning. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident occurred when a GMC Yukon came to a stop in the far-left lane due to traffic ahead. As the traffic slowed down, a Ford Escape, following the Yukon, reduced its speed, but a Volkswagen Tiguan failed to halt in time, crashing into the Ford Escape. This collision caused the Escape to hit the Yukon, then the Tiguan collided with the left wall, eventually spinning into the center lane.
The situation escalated as a Ford van subsequently impacted both the Volkswagen Tiguan and the Ford Escape. The chain of events led the Tiguan to veer right, striking a Ford F-150. In the aftermath, the driver of the Tiguan reported a brake malfunction, which prevented them from stopping until the vehicle naturally came to a halt.
Both the driver of the Volkswagen Tiguan and the Ford van were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. They were also issued citations for careless driving, as confirmed by the Florida Highway Patrol. Except for the Ford F-150, all involved vehicles had to be towed away from the scene, indicating significant vehicular damage.
This incident coincidentally followed another severe crash that had earlier shut down the opposite lanes of the Howard Frankland Bridge, highlighting a particularly hazardous day for commuters on this busy route.
The chain-reaction crash on the Howard Frankland Bridge underscores the risks of driving during congested periods, emphasizing the importance of maintaining safe following distances and vehicle maintenance, especially concerning braking systems.
