A serious incident unfolded on the Mathews Bridge on New Year’s Eve, drawing attention to the risks of impaired driving.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office reported a concerning accident that occurred on December 26, underscoring the dangers associated with driving under the influence. Officer H. Melvin, who was assisting two individuals with a disabled vehicle by activating emergency lights and parking his patrol car on the Mathews Bridge, was struck by a pickup truck driven by 30-year-old Aleksandr Bratulin.
According to law enforcement authorities, Bratulin was allegedly intoxicated when his truck collided with the officer’s vehicle. This impact resulted in a chain-reaction crash, which tragically pinned one of the motorists between two cars. Following the collision, Bratulin’s truck continued moving backward down the bridge, prompting Officer Melvin to pursue it.
Upon reaching the vehicle, Melvin discovered Bratulin and his passenger slumped over and unconscious. The seriousness of the incident was evident, with two individuals suffering severe injuries and requiring hospitalization, while Melvin sustained minor injuries in the process.
The aftermath of the crash was significant, leading to Bratulin’s arrest. He is now facing multiple charges, including six counts of DUI with property damage or personal injury. Additionally, charges of careless driving and failing to move over for an emergency vehicle have been filed against him.
