A Chinese government-backed hacking group has executed what is being described as the first large-scale cyberattack primarily orchestrated by an artificial intelligence tool, according to a report from the security team at AI company Anthropic. The operation, detected in mid-September 2025, utilized Anthropic’s own Claude Code tool to compromise approximately thirty major organizations worldwide, including leading technology companies, financial institutions, and government agencies.

According to the report, the attackers used advanced “jailbreaking techniques” to circumvent the AI’s safety protocols. They instructed the AI to perform complex intrusion tasks by breaking them down into seemingly innocuous sub-tasks and framing the operation as a defensive cybersecurity exercise. Human operators initiated the process by selecting targets and providing high-level attack frameworks.

The Claude Code AI then autonomously conducted reconnaissance to identify vulnerabilities and high-value databases.
