As Christmas approaches, parents nationwide are preparing their gift budgets. Recent survey results reveal state-by-state variations in spending expectations for children’s Christmas gifts this year.
According to a survey conducted by e-commerce company Coupon Birds, parents across the United States plan to spend an average of $461 per child this Christmas. The survey included responses from 2,500 parents, providing insight into both regional differences and overall spending trends.
In particular, New Jersey tops the list with an expected spending of $712 per child, reflecting a significant financial commitment towards festive gifts. Meanwhile, Texas follows closely with an anticipated expenditure of $659 per child, and both Pennsylvania and Massachusetts are expected to spend $648 per child.
However, the survey also highlights states where parents plan to spend more conservatively. In South Dakota, the average spend per child is projected to be $247, the lowest in the country. West Virginia families expect to spend $255, while Nebraska’s figure stands at $263.
Notably, nearly half of the surveyed parents, about 49%, anticipate going into debt to afford these holiday expenses, either through credit cards or Buy Now, Pay Later services. This financial strategy reflects the pressure parents feel to meet holiday expectations while managing their budgets.
Across the board, the survey results indicate a wide range of spending practices. On the high end, 9% of parents plan to spend $1,000 or more per child, showcasing the variance in financial approaches towards holiday gift-giving. Conversely, 4% of parents plan to allocate less than $100 per child, demonstrating a frugal approach during the festive season.
