In Florida City, a tragic shooting has claimed the life of 13-year-old Jahvon Taylor, sending shockwaves through the community and prompting calls to end gun violence.
Jahvon Taylor was a 7th grader at Homestead Middle School and a promising athlete with the Florida City Razorbacks football team. His sudden death has left his family, friends, and coaches devastated. Curtis Dewberry, Taylor’s former football and wrestling coach, expressed his sorrow, stating, ‘He will be missed, not just at the park but throughout the community.’ The promising teen was shot Saturday night while standing outside a home with friends near Northwest 13th Street and Sixth Avenue.
The night of the shooting, Taylor and another teen were caught in a barrage of gunfire. Miami-Dade police reported that while Taylor was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, he tragically succumbed to his injuries. The second teenager involved in the incident is expected to recover.
In the aftermath, Taylor’s family held a vigil to honor the young life lost too soon. His aunt, Jakilah Brady, is in disbelief over the tragic events, stating, ‘I’m just confused, I’m in shock, I don’t believe it. I feel like it’s all a dream, I just want him to wake up.’ Fueled by their grief, they are urging the public to come forward with any information that could assist in identifying the shooter.
The vigil was marked by mobile billboards displaying Taylor’s photo, appealing for tips to help find those responsible for the shooting. Among the mourners, Dewberry reiterated the urgent need to curb gun violence, remarking, ‘We have to stop the gun violence. All I can say is put the guns up and let the kids grow to be whatever they are going to be in life.’
While there have been developments in the investigation, with several individuals in custody for questioning, Miami-Dade police have not yet announced any arrests in connection with the shooting.
The Florida City community is left to grapple with the senseless loss of a young life, as they unite in their plea for an end to gun violence and hope for justice to be served.
