Authorities apprehended 16 Cuban migrants late Sunday night as they arrived near Key West International Airport.
Key West police reported that the group consisted of five women and eleven men, all bearing Cuban identifications and passports. The police responded promptly to South Roosevelt Boulevard, where they initially detained six of the individuals. Subsequently, the remaining migrants were located and taken into custody.
During the incident, two of the migrants required medical attention. Medics transported them to the Lower Keys Medical Center, citing issues related to dehydration and loss of feeling in their extremities. This highlights the often perilous conditions faced by migrants in their journey.
The remainder of the group was handed over to the U.S. Border Patrol for processing, ensuring that immigration protocols were followed. Meanwhile, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission secured the vessel used by the migrants, further indicating coordinated efforts by multiple agencies to handle the situation.
