In the latest developments surrounding the Doral incinerator, Miami-Dade County’s decision on its fate has hit another pause. This comes amid political engagement and calls for more exploration of options.
Last week, the involvement of the Trump family complicated matters when Eric Trump met with Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez. Trump voiced objections to the incinerator remaining in Doral, citing it as the location of Trump National Doral. Following this, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava confirmed discussions with Eric Trump, indicating that all possibilities were still open for consideration. “We had already decided that we wanted to take a little more time to explore some other options. I was able to say, we’re open to options,” she explained.
This week, the matter was expected to be addressed at the Miami-Dade County Commission meeting. However, Mayor Levine Cava confirmed intentions to propose a deferral of the decision. Commissioner Raquel Regalado has formally requested this deferral, leaving the commission to determine the length of the postponement.
Previously, Mayor Levine Cava had recommended maintaining the incinerator in Doral. This discussion was initiated last year after a fire destroyed the existing facility. Proposed relocation sites included the current Doral location, Medley, and areas near the Miami-Dade/Broward border. Recently, environmentalists have sought alternative solutions, prompting the mayor to consider options like increased landfilling beyond local areas. She stated, “One of the options that we had looked at but we’re going to look at again is the possibility of more landfilling, not necessarily locally, so we’re looking at all options, and I think it’s appropriate to take a little more time.”
The deferral is welcomed by many, including Doral’s city leadership. Christi Fraga, mayor of Doral, views this as progress. Fraga has also engaged with key stakeholders, including the Trump Organization, aiming to find a sustainable long-term solution for the county. “We’ll continue to have a conversation and put an action plan in what is the right solution for the county long term,” she emphasized.
The decision to potentially defer the Doral incinerator issue reflects the complexity and sensitivity surrounding the matter. By allowing more time for discussion and exploring various solutions, stakeholders hope to find a mutually beneficial outcome for the community.
