Jason Paul, 47, had been acting erratically, threatening his neighbor before retreating into his apartment and refusing to come out. As deputies arrived on the scene, they deemed Paul a potential threat to public safety. Consequently, they decided to invoke the Baker Act, which allows individuals to be involuntarily examined if they are considered a danger to themselves or others.
In an attempt to assess the situation, deputies looked through a window and discovered Paul holding a knife to a woman’s neck while she screamed for help. Officers immediately broke the window to gain entry and demanded Paul drop the knife. Despite multiple warnings, Paul refused to comply. Faced with a direct threat to the woman’s life, a deputy fired a shot, resulting in Paul’s death at the hospital shortly after.
Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer emphasized that the entire encounter, from the 911 call to the shooting, transpired within twenty minutes. He commended the deputies’ efforts to de-escalate the situation, regretting that it ended in a hostage scenario. Maurer stated, “Twenty minutes of trying to de-escalate this situation, and then it resulted in a hostage situation. Our deputies reacted incredibly in this time.”
The deputy involved in the shooting has been serving with the sheriff’s office since February 2024, with no prior instances of using force. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an investigation, which is standard protocol following such incidents.
