Deputies from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene at 1360 Highway 61 North at approximately 5:05 p.m., according to departmental reports. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered a blue Mercury passenger vehicle had veered off U.S. 61, traveled through the church’s gate and ascended a hill before impacting the front of the church building. Initial findings by investigators indicate that the driver suffered an apparent medical emergency prior to the vehicle leaving the roadway.
Responding deputies immediately initiated life-saving measures upon determining the driver had a weak pulse, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Adams County Emergency Medical Services (AMR) arrived shortly thereafter to continue medical intervention efforts. Despite these attempts, the driver was pronounced deceased by medical personnel at the scene. Sheriff Travis Patten confirmed that the next of kin has been notified.
