An early morning hit-and-run on Interstate 95 in Miami-Dade County resulted in a fatality, as authorities continue their search for the fleeing driver.
In a tragic incident early Saturday, a driver lost their life following a highway crash on Interstate 95 in Miami-Dade. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the collision occurred at approximately 4:10 a.m. on the southbound lanes, just past Northwest 79th Street.
Witnesses reported that a dark blue BMW sedan was moving along the outside lane when it abruptly impacted the rear of a gold Nissan sedan. The force of the collision propelled both vehicles several hundred feet down the highway, ultimately coming to a halt in the outside lanes. The crash resulted in immediate chaos on the roadway.
The situation escalated further as the Nissan burst into flames with the driver trapped inside. FHP confirmed that the driver could not escape and was pronounced dead at the scene. Their identity remains undisclosed pending family notification.
Meanwhile, the driver of the BMW was conspicuously absent when authorities arrived at the crash site. Investigators believe that the individual abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, prompting an ongoing search by law enforcement officials.
Due to the intensity of the fire, significant damage was sustained by the roadway, necessitating closures for repair work. Interstate 95 southbound traffic was disrupted as crews worked diligently to restore the damaged sections of the highway.
As authorities continue to investigate this fatal hit-and-run, they urge anyone with information to contact local law enforcement. The search for the fleeing driver remains a high priority.
