Authorities have identified Jacques Malik Mayfield as the driver charged in a tragic New Year’s Eve incident in Pompano Beach, where an electric scooter rider lost his life.
The crash occurred just before 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday near the 3000 block of Copans Road. According to officials from the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Mayfield was operating a white Audi Q7 when he collided with a scooter rider, Lokesley Myrthil, who was near the bicycle lane.
Myrthil struck the Audi’s windshield and was subsequently thrown onto the roadway. He died at the scene from his injuries.
Instead of stopping, Mayfield continued to drive. However, he eventually abandoned the vehicle, fleeing the scene with his passengers. Law enforcement, including officers from the Broward Sheriff’s Office and Coconut Creek Police, located Mayfield and one of his passengers as they attempted to leave in a rideshare. Both were apprehended.
Mayfield has been charged with several offenses, including failure to remain at the scene of an accident involving death, driving without a license resulting in death, and violating felony probation.
This incident underscores the severe consequences of fleeing accident scenes and driving without proper credentials. Jacques Malik Mayfield now faces significant legal repercussions, highlighting the importance of accountability and adherence to traffic laws.
