Epiphany Cross Dive Tradition Continues in Tarpon Springs

This Monday marks the continuation of a long-standing tradition as the Epiphany cross dive celebration enters its 119th year in Tarpon Springs. A significant event in the community calendar, the celebration sees 67 young men dive into the Bayou in search of a wooden cross, symbolizing a promising year of blessings.

John Hittos of Clearwater, the previous year’s successful diver, was celebrated for swiftly retrieving the cross and emphasized the spiritual significance over personal recognition. “It’s not just about you. It’s about Jesus, His baptism, and celebrating with the church. It’s a moment to rejoice with your fellow divers, your brothers in Christ,” reflected Hittos.

This year, John Hittos is prepared to pass the cross on, allowing new participants, including first-time diver Alexander Broderick from Spring Hill Christ the Savior Church, to have their moment. Before the event, Broderick, nervous but excited, received guidance from Hittos. “Don’t be so nervous that you’re just trying to go through the motions,” advised Hittos. “Take a deep breath. Thank God to be there and just enjoy what you’re doing.” Broderick expressed gratitude for the opportunity, noting, “I’m really grateful to be able to participate in this event. It’s not like too many people are able to, and it’s really special since it is my first time doing it.”

The Epiphany cross dive is recognized as the largest celebration of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. This year’s event carries an extra layer of significance as the community reflects on their resilience following last year’s storms, which left extensive damage. “Everyone lost something. It was very detrimental to the community. But being here to come together, it’ll be great,” shared Hittos.

The tradition not only strengthens the spiritual bonds among participants but also serves as a reminder of the community’s shared history and resilience. Teenagers eagerly prepare to take part, each hoping to experience the honor and blessings associated with finding the cross. Meanwhile, the community comes together, celebrating unity and the continuation of a cherished local tradition.

As the Tarpon Springs community gathers for this year’s Epiphany cross dive, they celebrate more than just a tradition. This event symbolizes hope, renewal, and the enduring spirit of a community that stands strong in times of adversity. Participants and spectators alike are reminded of the blessings and unity that this cherished ceremony brings each year.
