A new installation, “Da Vinci — An Immersive Art Experience,” currently on display in Boynton Beach, Florida, offers an innovative way for viewers to engage with Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpieces. This exhibition, brought to life at the South Florida PBS Studios, merges art with technology, creating an interactive setting to dissect the works of the Renaissance genius.
The immersive experience is situated at the South Florida PBS Studios, transformed to echo Renaissance Italy with its showcase of over 50 famous works by Leonardo da Vinci. Among the highlights are pieces like “The Virgin of the Rocks,” “The Baptism of Christ,” and da Vinci’s inventive ornithopter flying machine. This exhibition initially debuted in Berlin in 2022 and has since traveled to Amsterdam before arriving in Florida.
During this visit, attendees can engage with a large-scale projection of the “Mona Lisa.” Utilizing digital projections and advanced AI technologies, the experience also employs audiovisual storytelling and 360-degree immersion. Visitors are invited to have conversations with the projected Mona Lisa via their smartphones, making her an interactive element rather than just a static piece of art. The projection technique allows the Mona Lisa’s eyes to follow the visitor, and her smile changes subtly, offering a sense of life-like presence.
The exhibition extends beyond visual enjoyment by incorporating educational opportunities. Since its opening, it has been the focus of almost 70 organized educational trips, welcoming over 3,000 students from Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties. These students have the opportunity to connect historic art with contemporary innovation through interactive elements such as geometric art design, sketching, and musical collaboration.
The immersive experience is complemented by South Florida PBS’s recent premiere of a documentary, “Leonardo da Vinci — A film by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, and David McMahon,” which delves into the life of this polymath. This strategic timing allows audiences to first understand da Vinci’s works through the documentary, then experience them in the immersive setting. Ken Burns highlights da Vinci’s unique ability to bridge art and science, enhancing the public’s understanding of the natural world.
