A devastating fire on Christmas Eve displaced a family of 11 in Miami after flames engulfed their duplex.
City of Miami Fire Rescue units swiftly responded to the call, arriving at the 2900 block of South Federal Highway shortly after 4 p.m. Upon arrival, crews encountered a single-family home engulfed in heavy smoke and flames. Despite the family’s efforts to control the fire with a hose, the situation quickly escalated. Jose Davila, a family member, recalled, “We tried to use the hose to put water but it was too much. You couldn’t see anything, couldn’t breathe. Then fire rescue came, and they took charge.”
Surveillance footage captured the rapid response of firefighters who worked diligently to extinguish the blaze. Officials confirmed that a thorough search of the property was conducted to ensure no individuals were trapped inside. Within minutes, the fire was contained, and surrounding structures were protected from potential damage.
The fire inflicted significant damage on the interior of the home, melting appliances and destroying furniture. However, firefighters managed to salvage the family’s Christmas gifts, providing a small solace amidst the devastation. The family expressed their gratitude that no one was injured, especially the children, some of whom have special needs.
Davila shared the emotional toll the incident has taken on them, noting the tragic coincidence of the fire with the anniversary of his grandfather’s passing on Christmas Eve. “It’s a difficult situation,” he explained, “because my grandfather passed away on Christmas Eve, so we always have that emotional moment, and having this on top of that, it’s not easy.”
Four children were among the 11 family members living in the duplex. The quick-thinking actions of a niece, who was napping at the time, played a crucial role in alerting the family to the danger. “My niece was taking a nap, was sleeping, and she said she felt some smell,” Davila recounted. Her prompt reaction undoubtedly helped avert a tragedy.
The origins of the fire remain under investigation, but preliminary observations suggest it may have ignited in a small play area. Meanwhile, the American Red Cross has been contacted to provide assistance for the displaced family. Additionally, a GoFundMe campaign initiated by a family member has raised over $19,000 in just two days, demonstrating the community’s support for the family in their time of need.
Davila expressed profound gratitude for the generosity extended by the public. “We cannot express in words how thankful we are of their generosity and empathy, because this is what we need in this moment,” he stated. The funds are aimed at addressing immediate necessities such as temporary housing, clothing, and other essentials.
The resilience and rapid response of both the family and emergency services prevented a potential tragedy, underscoring the importance of community support during times of crisis. As investigations continue to uncover the cause of the fire, the family focuses on rebuilding and overcoming this challenging period.
