The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has released new video footage in an ongoing investigation to identify the individual responsible for placing pipe bombs near the offices of the Democratic and Republican National Committees on January 5, 2021, the eve of the Capitol riot.
The search for answers surrounding the planting of pipe bombs outside key political offices in Washington, D.C., continues as the FBI seeks public assistance in solving the case. The newly released video footage aims to generate fresh leads by offering a closer look at the suspect, who remains unidentified four years after the incident occurred.
The suspect’s identity continues to elude authorities despite extensive investigative efforts. The FBI estimates the suspect to be approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall, although their gender remains unknown. Through surveillance footage, the suspect is observed wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, face mask, and distinctive Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes, of which fewer than 25,000 pairs were sold from August 2018 to January 2021.
David Sundberg, assistant director of the FBI’s Washington field office, emphasized the importance of gathering concrete evidence in moving the case forward, stating, “Without being able to confirm the suspect’s identity, it is very hard to definitively establish motive.” This statement reflects the FBI’s commitment to follow facts and evidence, avoiding speculation despite existing conspiracy theories promoted by certain political factions.
The bureau’s efforts include reviewing over 600 tips and conducting more than 1,000 interviews. However, significant gaps remain, particularly due to a 17-hour delay between the planting and discovery of the bombs. This has hindered witness identification and complicated the investigation. Meanwhile, video quality from surveillance cameras has often been poor, providing only sporadic visibility of the suspect’s actions and movements.
The first pipe bomb was found outside the Democratic National Committee building while then-Vice President-elect Kamala Harris was inside. As the situation unfolded, Nancy Pelosi’s motorcade passed the area when she was evacuated from the Capitol. The other explosive device was planted behind the Republican National Committee offices.
In an attempt to revive the investigation, the FBI is also highlighting the suspect’s attire, particularly the sneakers, in newly released close-up images. Investigators remain hopeful that these distinctive features might help someone recognize the suspect.
Despite challenges, the FBI is determined to pursue this case to its conclusion. The potential change in administration is not expected to impact the direction of the investigation, as the focus remains on identifying and apprehending the individual behind the planned attack.”
