In a startling collision on a Saturday morning, a Delray Beach Fire Rescue truck was hit by a Brightline train, resulting in injuries to 15 individuals.
The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. near the intersection of East Atlantic Avenue and SE 1st Avenue. An aerial ladder firetruck was crossing the Florida East Coast (FEC) tracks when it was struck by the oncoming train.
According to Sergeant Matt Saraceni from the Delray Beach Police Traffic Homicide Unit, three firefighters were hospitalized following the accident. Among them, two firefighters were transported as trauma alerts to the Delray Beach Medical Center, but all are reported to be in stable condition.
Additionally, 12 passengers aboard the Brightline train sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
The chief of Delray Beach Fire Rescue, Ronald Martin, mentioned that there was a service call in the area shortly before the crash. However, he could not confirm whether the firetruck was responding to or had been released from that call at the time of the collision.
