A serious firework accident in Florida City resulted in a man being airlifted to a hospital after sustaining severe injuries to his hand.
Surveillance footage captured a disturbing scene where a U-Haul van’s side was smeared with blood following a firework accident. The incident occurred Monday afternoon at an M&M store located at the 500 block of West Lucy Street, according to police reports.
After the explosion, the injured man managed to drive himself to a friend’s house in Homestead, pulling up at the 1800 block of Northeast Second Court. In the surveillance video, the victim’s hand, visibly injured, is seen hanging out of the driver’s side window, with blood evident on the vehicle’s door. As they awaited the arrival of Fire Rescue, a woman is seen rushing to provide assistance.
Homestead Police initiated an investigation upon arrival and discovered a combination of illegal and commercial-grade fireworks within the U-Haul. Authorities suspect the victim was engaged in selling illegal fireworks when one unexpectedly detonated in his hand.
The victim was transported to Homestead Hospital and subsequently airlifted to Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he remains in stable condition. Despite his stability, several surgeries on his hand are necessary, as confirmed by medical personnel.
The Miami-Dade Police Bomb Squad was called to safely dispose of the remaining fireworks. In light of this incident, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue emphasized the importance of leaving firework handling to professionals. ‘The best way to celebrate New Year’s is by leaving the fireworks to the experts,’ stated Erika Benitez, spokesperson for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
Details about the victim remain undisclosed, and cooperation from the individual has been lacking, as noted by Florida City Police. This incident serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers associated with handling fireworks.
This unfortunate event underscores the inherent risks involved with fireworks, particularly when handled by non-professionals. It highlights the need for caution and responsibility, especially during celebratory occasions. Individuals are advised to prioritize safety by entrusting firework displays to trained professionals.
