A man from Manatee County, Florida, wanted for a shooting incident involving multiple victims, was apprehended in Georgia.
Ronnie D. Morton III, aged 23, was detained by the Savannah Police Department following a coordinated effort involving detectives who discovered his travel on an Amtrak train from Florida to North Carolina. His cell phone signals were tracked, revealing his presence on the railroad tracks north of Jacksonville on December 7, before he entered Georgia.
The arrest occurred at a train station in Savannah after an investigator, in collaboration with Amtrak Police and Savannah Police, successfully located Morton. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office indicated that Morton was involved in a shooting at around 1 a.m. on November 29, in the parking lot of Absolute Sports Lounge in Bradenton. During the incident, Morton allegedly fired multiple rounds following an argument with a 25-year-old man. The man Morton’s shots were aimed at suffered several gunshot wounds, alongside four unintended victims. Fortunately, the injuries were not life-threatening, allowing all victims to receive treatment at local hospitals.
Initial witness statements did not provide deputies with substantial details; however, the investigation soon suggested Morton’s intended state departure. Morton now faces five counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, felony possession of a firearm, and charges of armed robbery stemming from a prior outstanding warrant within Manatee County. Presently, he is detained in the Chatham County Jail, awaiting extradition back to Manatee County.
Efforts to uncover the identity of another individual who accompanied Morton at the time of the shooting are ongoing. The individual in question is described as a Black male wearing a black and silver shirt displaying the number 77. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers.
