Former President Jimmy Carter Passes Away at Age 100

Former President Jimmy Carter, known for his commitment to human rights and environmental causes, passed away at the age of 100 in Plains, Georgia, as confirmed by The Carter Center.

Jimmy Carter, who was the longest-living former U.S. President, entered hospice care in early 2023. His death follows the passing of his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who died nearly two years prior in their Plains home. Their children, Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy, along with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, survive him. “My father was a hero,” remarked his son Chip Carter, recalling his father’s dedication to peace and human rights.

Carter’s presidency, from 1977 to 1981, was marked by both challenges and significant achievements. He emerged as a political figure from his roots as a Georgia governor and a peanut farmer, eventually defeating Gerald Ford in the 1976 presidential election. His administration was characterized by a focus on human rights, environmentalism, and the diversification of the federal judiciary. Notable accomplishments included the Camp David Accords and establishing diplomatic relations with China.

His time in office was also fraught with issues like the energy crisis, the Love Canal toxic waste discovery, and the Iran hostage crisis, which many believe affected his chances for reelection. Despite these setbacks, Carter’s legacy extends beyond his presidency. He was renowned for his post-presidency humanitarian efforts, including founding The Carter Center, which works globally to promote democracy and improve health. In 2002, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his contributions to resolving international conflicts.

Beyond politics, Carter was a distinguished author, writing over two dozen books. He was deeply committed to religious principles, famously severing his ties with the Southern Baptist Convention over gender equality issues. His profound impacts extend to reshaping the judiciary, particularly through appointing Ruth Bader Ginsburg to the U.S. Court of Appeals.

In later years, Carter battled health issues but remained active in public service. Despite a cancer diagnosis in 2015, he expressed peace with his situation, stating he was ready for any outcome. His enduring contributions to global peace and human rights remain pivotal in his legacy.

As the world reflects on Jimmy Carter’s profound legacy, his unwavering commitment to human rights, peace, and global health stands as a testament to a life devoted to service. Carter’s influence endures through the transformative initiatives he championed both during and after his presidency.
