Former Teacher Arrested for Inappropriate Relationship with Student

Authorities in Lakeland, Florida, have arrested a former teacher from Kathleen High School following allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a student.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the situation came to light when a 19-year-old woman disclosed on social media her past relationship with 36-year-old Donald Mitchell. She reported that the relationship began while she was still a student at the high school.

Despite initially denying the allegations, Mr. Mitchell admitted to frequent texting with the young woman but claimed the romantic involvement only began after she graduated. Upon investigation, detectives found that Mitchell had deleted numerous text messages exchanged with the student, expressing concern that his wife might discover them.

Reviewing the communications, detectives noted several messages from Mitchell to the victim that were deemed incriminating. Notably, on February 14, Mitchell messaged the victim stating, “I’m here to grow and groom you into what I know you’re capable of being!” Further messages from Mitchell expressed affection and the desire to maintain their relationship despite the risks involved.

Sheriff Grady Judd of Polk County emphasized the breach of trust demonstrated by Mitchell. “Using one’s position of authority and trust over a student is egregious,” he stated. “Students rely on teachers to be educators and mentors, and Mitchell abused this trust by turning the relationship between him and his student sexual. This type of behavior will not be tolerated.”

Mitchell, who had been working as a Community Outreach Facilitator for the Polk County School Board, has been placed on administrative leave pending a further investigation. Fred Heid, the Superintendent of Polk County Public Schools, remarked on the severity of the situation, confirming Mitchell’s resignation and the ongoing cooperation with law enforcement.

The arrest underscores a significant concern regarding the potential for abuse of power within educational institutions. The case continues to develop as Ms. Heid and the school board work closely with the police to ensure justice and safety for the community.

The incident at Kathleen High School highlights the critical need for vigilance and ethical behavior in educational settings to protect students and maintain the integrity of educator-student relationships.
