A Fort Lauderdale man has been apprehended following a violent incident involving an Amazon delivery driver. The confrontation occurred on December 7th, when the driver was attacked and robbed along Northwest 10th Terrace.
The altercation took place shortly after 7:30 p.m., leaving the delivery driver injured and in need of medical assistance. Authorities identified the suspect as 33-year-old Curtis Gardner, who now faces serious charges, including felony attempted murder, armed carjacking, and burglary with battery.
On the evening of the attack, the driver had been dealing with a flat tire when an unknown individual approached. The suspect drew a knife, inflicting a stab wound on the driver before escaping with one of the driver’s belongings. Fort Lauderdale Police confirmed that Gardner had been detained on Monday morning, following their identification of him as the primary suspect.
The investigation revealed that the victim’s flat tire was likely a coincidence, with no evidence suggesting it was a deliberate act by the assailant. However, authorities noted that the investigation is ongoing and the facts could evolve as new information emerges.
Surveillance footage from a nearby home captured the wounded driver seeking help at a residence, where he found no response, prompting him to continue to a nearby convenience store. Employees at the store quickly assisted the driver, prioritizing his safety and contacting emergency services. Asim Roi, the store owner, praised his staff’s quick thinking, saying, “For us, life is first, save a life first, no matter what.” He emphasized the importance of immediately contacting 911 to ensure the driver’s well-being.
Additional surveillance video showed the arrival of Fort Lauderdale officers at the scene, who provided further aid. As a result of the attack, the driver was hospitalized in serious condition but is expected to survive.
In response, an Amazon spokesperson stated that the company is cooperating fully with the investigation and emphasized the support and safety measures in place for their delivery drivers. They reiterated their policy that drivers should not proceed with deliveries if they feel unsafe and highlighted the de-escalation and safety training provided to their employees.
Gardner appeared in court and was ordered to be held without bond, further illustrating the gravity of the accusations he faces.
The swift action by law enforcement and the cooperation of community members played a crucial role in addressing this unfortunate event. As the investigation continues, authorities remain focused on uncovering any additional details surrounding the attack.
