In a grim development, the uncle of a 7-year-old boy from Fort Lauderdale has been charged following the boy’s tragic death from starvation.
Jeremy Graham stands accused of severely neglecting his nephew, Deonte Atwell, leading to manslaughter charges. The Fort Lauderdale Police have arrested Graham on multiple counts, highlighting severe neglect and abuse. Atwell was found dead on December 25, 2023, weighing only seven pounds.
The Broward State Attorney’s Office noted that Atwell suffered from significant medical conditions, including thoracic spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Despite requiring constant medical care, it appears that the necessary support was tragically withheld by both family and healthcare providers.
Authorities suggest that the young boy had endured months of neglect, during which time he became severely malnourished. The chilling details reveal that his weight was a mere seven pounds, with bones visibly protruding through his skin at the time of his death.
In addition to Graham, several other family members and healthcare workers have been charged in connection with Atwell’s death. Those arrested include Atwell’s mother, Michelle Doe, his brother, Tyreck Irvin, and grandfather, James Graham. Charges extend to Mirlande Moltimer Ameda, the owner of the home health provider, and Cassandre Lassegue, a nurse responsible for Atwell’s care.
Following the investigation, Jeremy Graham has been detained with a bail set at $121,000. This case highlights the severe consequences of neglect and the importance of diligent care for vulnerable individuals.
The untimely death of Deonte Atwell underscores the serious repercussions of neglect and abuse, particularly in cases involving children with special needs. The ongoing legal proceedings aim to address the failings that led to this tragic situation.
