Fred Kerley Charged with Domestic Violence in Miami

Renowned U.S. sprinter Fred Kerley finds himself embroiled in legal troubles following his arrest in Miami Beach this week, which has led to additional charges stemming from a domestic incident earlier this year.

Kerley’s recent confrontation with Miami Beach police occurred late Thursday night. The Olympian was captured on body camera during a physical encounter with law enforcement, resulting in charges of battery on a police officer and disorderly conduct. This unfolded when Kerley allegedly interrupted officers at an active scene on 9th Street, concerned about his nearby parked vehicle. Despite requests to leave the area, he persisted, leading to a tense exchange that involved the use of a Taser, witnessed by his girlfriend, known as DJ Sky High Baby.

However, the situation took a turn over the weekend when Kerley appeared in court for separate charges of domestic violence by strangulation and strong-arm robbery, dating back to May 2024. The charges relate to an alleged altercation with his wife of three years, with whom he has three children. According to police reports, the incident was triggered by a confrontation over a suspicious Instagram message. The report details that Kerley allegedly responded aggressively, leading to a physical altercation wherein his wife struck him in self-defense. Subsequently, Kerley is accused of restraining her, making it difficult for her to breathe. When she attempted to call for help, Kerley tried to seize her phone, inciting further violence.

Witnesses intervened, separating Kerley from his wife, after which he allegedly took her phone and fled. Upon arrival, police noted that Kerley had left the scene, and witnesses were unwilling to provide statements. Despite this, a ‘probable cause for arrest message’ was filed in state and national crime information systems, which set the stage for the charges following Kerley’s arrest Thursday night.

In a video conference during the court session, Kerley’s wife expressed her intent to press charges, despite previous requests to speak in his favor. The court set a bond of $7,500 for the robbery charge and $5,000 for domestic violence, along with a restraining order requiring Kerley to maintain a distance of at least 500 feet from the alleged victim.

Kerley’s release from custody is anticipated on his own recognizance for the latest altercation with police, although he remains at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. The circumstances surrounding the delay in his initial arrest in May remain unclear. The unfolding legal proceedings have sparked significant public interest, focusing on the implications for Kerley’s athletic career and personal life.

The legal challenges facing Fred Kerley highlight a significant moment in the athlete’s life, as he prepares to address the grave accusations against him. The proceedings in Miami will likely impact both his personal and professional future, drawing attention from across the sporting community and beyond.
