Early Saturday morning, a high-speed chase on the Selmon Expressway resulted in a dramatic crash and the subsequent arrest of the suspect, identified as Jovontae Henderson, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The incident began as Jovontae Henderson was spotted driving a BMW at an extremely high speed on State Rd. 618. FHP officers pursued the vehicle, attempting two precision immobilization techniques (PIT maneuvers) during the chase. Despite these efforts, the BMW continued at dangerous speeds, reaching up to 120 miles per hour in a zone designated for 55 MPH.
The pursuit concluded about half a mile from where it initially began, when Henderson’s vehicle collided with a Florida Highway Patrol car. This collision resulted in minor injuries to the FHP officer involved. Henderson, already known to authorities due to multiple suspensions and prior convictions for driving with a suspended license (DWLS), was apprehended on the scene.
According to FHP, Henderson faces an additional charge of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer due to using his BMW as a deadly weapon during the crash. His arrest adds to his legal challenges, as there was already at least one active warrant against him.
This incident underscores the risks involved in high-speed pursuits, both for law enforcement and the public. While the chase ended without significant injuries, it serves as a reminder of the potential dangers posed by fleeing suspects on public roads.
The arrest of Jovontae Henderson following a high-speed chase on the Selmon Expressway highlights ongoing challenges in law enforcement pursuits. The successful apprehension of the suspect without severe injuries is notable, considering the speeds and potential risks involved.
