Hillsborough County Deputy Charged with Domestic Battery

A deputy from Hillsborough County has been apprehended following accusations of domestic battery involving a woman residing with him, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Mark Verkest, aged 38, was detained at his residence in Mulberry, Florida, on Saturday. He faces one count of Domestic Violence Battery. Verkest was also placed under a Baker Act due to certain statements he made during the incident.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed strong disapproval of the deputy’s conduct. “Deputies are entrusted with the responsibility to serve as role models in our community, and this behavior is completely unacceptable and disappointing,” Chronister stated. He further emphasized the need for deputies to adhere to high standards of conduct and integrity in both their professional and personal lives.

Currently, Verkest is on unpaid administrative leave as the investigation proceeds. He has been serving with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office since September 2017. This matter is under investigation by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The arrest of Deputy Mark Verkest underscores the importance of integrity and accountability within law enforcement agencies. It also serves as a reminder of the high standards to which officers are held.
