As temperatures in Hillsborough County are forecasted to plunge to around 40 degrees overnight, cold weather shelters are set to open to provide refuge for those in need.
The shelters will commence operations on Saturday evening, receiving individuals from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., or until they reach capacity. With limited availability, residents are advised to seek accommodation with friends or family where possible.
The county has designated specific shelters for adults only. These facilities include the Church of God of Prophecy Hyde Park located at 107 S. Oregon Ave., Tampa, Hyde Park United Methodist Church at 500 W. Platt St., Tampa, Tampa Bay Mission of Hope at 212 S. St. Cloud Ave. Building A, Valrico, and Amazing Love Ministries at 3304 E. Columbus Dr., Tampa.
In situations where families with children require shelter, a limited number of single-night motel vouchers are being offered. These are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, and pre-registration is necessary by contacting (813) 209-1176.
The establishment of these shelters highlights the community’s effort to support its vulnerable populations during unexpected cold weather. The initiative encourages residents to be thoughtful of their less fortunate neighbors and take appropriate measures to assist them.
As the cold front approaches, Hillsborough County demonstrates a proactive approach in mitigating weather-related challenges. By providing accessible shelter options, the county aims to lessen the impact of the harsh drop in temperatures.
As Hillsborough County braces for colder weather, the opening of these shelters reflects a concerted effort to ensure the safety and wellbeing of its residents. This initiative underscores the importance of community support in times of need, providing a crucial safety net for individuals facing adverse conditions.
