In a troubling incident early Saturday morning, a security officer from Hillsborough County Public Schools was apprehended on charges of driving under the influence, as reported by local law enforcement authorities.
Deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office intervened when they observed a vehicle swerving along Sunforest Drive and Eisenhower Boulevard in Tampa around 3:30 a.m. The driver, identified as 57-year-old David Cruzado, was reportedly in his school security uniform at the time of the arrest.
Upon conducting a traffic stop, officers noted signs of impairment in Mr. Cruzado. Subsequent field sobriety tests were administered, leading to his arrest. Breathalyzer tests indicated blood alcohol levels of .168 and .175, which are significantly above the legal limit.
Officers also discovered that Cruzado had his gun belt and firearm in the vehicle. This detail adds a disturbing element considering his role in ensuring the safety of school environments. Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed disappointment, emphasizing that those in positions of public trust must adhere to higher standards and that Cruzado’s actions were inexcusable.
“This incident involving a school security officer is deeply disappointing,” Sheriff Chronister stated. “His decision to drive under the influence endangered our community and is unacceptable—especially for someone entrusted with the safety of our schools. Authorities have charged Cruzado with a DUI, specifically for having a blood alcohol content over 0.15, and the investigation remains ongoing.
