A couple from St. Marys has embarked on a touching mission this holiday season, choosing an unexpected setting to spread festive cheer: the local cemetery.
While walking through Oak Grove Cemetery, they noticed gravesites that appeared neglected, with some headstones dating back to the 1800s showing signs of decay. Moved by the state of these forgotten areas, the couple decided to bring a bit of holiday spirit to them.
Their initiative involves decorating these gravesites with seasonal items like small artificial Christmas trees, blue garlands, snowmen, and even snow globes. This gesture is more than just holiday decoration for them. Tiffany Hill, one of the individuals involved, expressed a deeper motive: ‘It’s kind of sad,’ she noted, emphasizing how cemeteries often go unnoticed. She mentioned that such efforts could perhaps encourage more people to visit cemeteries and tend to them.
The couple is committed to continuing their decorating efforts throughout the holiday season, including visits on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Moreover, they have assured that the decorations will be removed by New Year’s Day to prevent any potential littering, maintaining respect for the cemetery grounds.
This unique gesture by the St. Marys couple reflects a sincere attempt to honor those who might otherwise be forgotten. By enhancing the cemeteries with festive decorations, they not only honor the deceased but also inspire a renewed respect and care for these resting places.
