State Representative Hillary Cassel of Broward County has made a significant political shift by changing her party affiliation from Democrat to Republican, contributing to the Republican supermajority in the Florida House.
Cassel, a Dania Beach attorney, announced her decision in a post on X, citing a growing alignment with the Republican Party’s vision for Florida. She expressed concerns over the Democratic Party’s stance on certain issues, particularly its support for Israel, which she feels is inadequate. In her statement, Cassel emphasized the importance of character and actions over labels, a belief she wants to pass on to future generations.
Her decision follows that of Tampa Representative Susan Valdes, who also switched parties after failing to secure a leadership position within the Democratic Party. Cassel’s move has been met with both praise and criticism. Republican Party of Florida Chairman Evan Power commended her for joining the Republicans, affirming her value to the team. Meanwhile, Democratic leaders like Rep. Angie Nixon and Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus President Kristen Browde criticized Cassel’s decision, viewing it as a betrayal of Democratic values and the trust of her voters.
Cassel was first elected in 2022 to represent Broward County’s House District 101 and was re-elected without opposition. Despite her departure from the Democratic Party, Cassel acknowledges that differences will exist within the Republican Party but remains confident in the collaborative and respectful environment she anticipates. Her switch strengthens the Republican hold in the House, increasing their representation to 87 members out of 120. This change is seen as a setback for Democrats, who have struggled to reduce the Republican supermajority following recent elections.
Cassel’s party switch reflects an ongoing trend of political realignment within Florida. As the Republican majority grows, Democrats face challenges in regaining influence in the state legislature, prompting further discussion on the future of political dynamics in Florida.
