A Hubert man faces multiple felony charges following an alleged armed carjacking of a driver’s education vehicle at a local high school, which culminated in a high-speed pursuit and crash involving law enforcement.
Dominic Dovantea Evins, 33, was charged on November 25 with two counts of larceny of a motor vehicle, robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, assault by pointing a gun, and possession of a firearm on educational property. According to Trevor Dunnell, public information officer for the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO), the charges stem from a series of incidents that began on the afternoon of November 18.
Officers with the Jacksonville Police Department were first dispatched to Doris Avenue around 3:30 p.m. regarding a vehicle theft. Approximately one hour later, OCSO deputies received reports of an armed carjacking at White Oak High School. Investigators stated that the suspect, identified as Evins, commandeered a driver’s education vehicle occupied by an instructor and two students. Officials confirmed that no injuries were reported among the victims, and the suspect fled the campus immediately after the incident.
Deputies located the stolen vehicle shortly thereafter, initiating a pursuit during which the suspect reportedly reached speeds of up to 115 miles per hour. Police reports indicate the chase concluded when Evins lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a residence on Riggs Road. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a hospital before being released into police custody. Investigators subsequently linked Evins to the earlier vehicle theft on Doris Avenue.
Legal Proceedings and Safety Impact
Evins appeared in Onslow County District Court on Wednesday for his first appearance, where he was held without bond. He remains incarcerated at the Onslow County Detention Center. The severity of the charges, particularly those involving firearms on school property and the endangerment of students, highlights the gravity with which local authorities are treating the case. It is important to note that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
