In observance of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with the Children’s Aid Society of Alabama to install informational signs regarding human trafficking in middle and high school bathrooms throughout the county. The initiative, part of the Child Trafficking Solutions Project, aims to provide critical resources and warnings directly to students in a private setting.
According to officials involved in the project, the signs are designed to outline warning indicators, debunk common myths, and provide contact information for assistance. Jan Bell, director of the Child Trafficking Solutions Project, emphasized that public perception of trafficking often differs from reality. “There’s a myth that there’s just a white van and its just gonna grab our kids… but 99.9% of the time the kids are developing this relationship through grooming,” Bell stated. She further noted that online predators currently represent the primary threat to children, often leading to in-person meetings.
Sheriff Mark Pettway indicated that the signage campaign is one component of a broader law enforcement strategy. “We are talking to the kids at schools. We’re getting out as much as we can to people about human trafficking,” Sheriff Pettway said. He added that the department is simultaneously training deputies to better identify individuals who may be victims of labor or sex trafficking. Sheriff Pettway also confirmed that similar signage will soon be installed in Jefferson County elementary schools.
