As the holiday season approaches, South Florida’s bustling travel hubs become a target for human trafficking activities, prompting public awareness efforts.
During the holiday season, the surge in travel through South Florida’s international airports and bustling ports presents opportunities for human traffickers to operate more freely. Amanda Altman, CEO of Kristi House, highlights the increased risks, stating, “People come here to have a good time. And unfortunately, part of having a good time sometimes includes trafficking.” The region’s history of hosting major events, such as the Super Bowl and Formula 1 racing, further exacerbates this issue as large crowds draw in individuals with disposable income.
Human trafficking can occur in various settings, from airports to shopping centers and even on social media platforms. Altman advises the public to be vigilant, especially when traveling, as traffickers exploit the chaos and distraction of the holiday season. A significant red flag is when an individual lacks control over their personal documents. “If somebody doesn’t have control over their own documents, that’s a really big red flag,” Altman warns, emphasizing the importance of noticing when someone relies on another adult for handling essential items like passports or tickets.
Moreover, the holiday break sees a rise in online solicitations targeting children. With students away from school and spending more time online, they become vulnerable to online predators. Altman stresses the need for parents to monitor their children’s online activities closely, especially during this busy time. According to the FBI, one in five children will encounter sexual solicitation online, underscoring the need for increased vigilance.
Kristi House, Miami-Dade’s nationally accredited children’s advocacy center, plays a crucial role in addressing these issues by providing victim advocacy services and prevention education. The center coordinates cases involving child sex abuse and human trafficking, aiming to protect the community by spreading awareness about the signs and risks associated with these crimes.
Amid the excitement of the holiday season, the risk of human trafficking in South Florida demands public attention. By staying informed and vigilant, individuals can help prevent such crimes and ensure a safer environment for all.
