On Christmas Eve, an unsettling incident unfolded at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, as police intervened in a case involving a child left alone. Authorities reported the arrest of Rubi C. Verduzco, 29, of Oklahoma, under charges of child neglect.
The Seminole Police Department responded to a call at the casino where an infant was found unattended at the bell desk. The responding officer observed the child, notably wearing a soiled diaper and seated in a stroller exposed to the elements. This concerning scene prompted immediate investigation by the authorities.
Casino staff indicated that three men abandoned the baby close to half an hour prior to the officer’s arrival. Notably, it took an additional 15 to 20 minutes for Verduzco to appear at the scene, according to police reports. Her identification was verified through an Oklahoma Medical Marijuana card.
Verduzco’s condition at the time of arrest raised alarms as she appeared intoxicated, exhibiting symptoms such as bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and a pronounced smell of alcohol, according to law enforcement. This added a layer of urgency to the situation, as her ability to care for the infant was in question.
In interaction with the police, Verduzco provided the baby’s name but was uncertain about the child’s birthdate, highlighting her compromised state. She contacted a man she identified as the child’s father; he initially claimed to be in Oklahoma, suggesting that state custody of the baby was preferable. However, he later stated he was in Orlando, uncertain of his ability to retrieve the infant.
As the case developed, the Florida Department of Children and Families was notified and assumed custody of the baby. Verduzco, unable to fulfill her parental duties at the time, was taken to Broward County’s Main Jail with a bond set at $2,500.
This incident underscores significant concerns about child welfare and parental responsibility.
