A man in his 30s died after being detained by Tampa police, sparking an investigation into the incident.
The Tampa Police Department is currently conducting an investigation following the death of a man in custody on Thursday. Officers initially responded to reports of a man behaving erratically at a store located on E. Broadway, but upon their arrival, the individual had already left the scene.
Approximately an hour later, the man approached another officer at a nearby bank, expressing concerns that he was being pursued. The officers subsequently detained the man under the Baker Act, a Florida law that enables involuntary mental health examination for individuals exhibiting mental health crises.
The detained individual was then transported to Gracepoint Wellness, a mental health facility. It was reported by the police that the man continued to display erratic behavior during his assessment at the facility.
While medical personnel were evaluating him in the presence of officers, the individual began to foam at the mouth. He was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital; however, he did not survive.
The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s office is tasked with determining the precise cause of the man’s death. At this time, the name of the deceased has not been disclosed, but he is described as being in his 30s.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the man in custody is ongoing, with authorities awaiting further information from the medical examiner.
