Investigation Underway in Cooper City After Geese Incident

Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives are actively investigating a case that has left the Cooper City community in disbelief. Surveillance footage has emerged showing a group of teenagers on an off-road vehicle brutally killing 30 Egyptian geese near a tranquil canal-side neighborhood.

On December 28, at approximately 7:45 p.m., the quiet neighborhood near Southwest 49th Street and 120th Avenue witnessed a disturbing crime. Witnesses reported that the geese were intentionally run over by individuals riding a vehicle resembling an ATV. These young individuals were seen laughing as they repeated their actions, indicating a deliberate act of cruelty.

Brian Schaffer, a local resident who witnessed the event, described the scene, “They’re circling around, running them back over again.” After the group departed, Schaffer managed to collect nearly 30 deceased birds, highlighting the severity of the incident. One injured goose was found with broken legs and was taken to a veterinarian for immediate care.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office has released surveillance footage in hopes of identifying the suspects and the vehicle involved. The ATV was last seen entering the Flamingo Townhomes subdivision, raising concerns about the actions of the riders within the local community.

Despite being classified as an invasive species in Florida, Egyptian geese are still subject to animal cruelty laws. This indicates that those responsible may face serious consequences if apprehended. The officers emphasized the violent nature of the incident, with Schaffer noting, “It’s sick. Somebody has a twisted mind that needs help because that preludes to other things that this world is dealing with.”

Authorities encourage anyone with information to step forward and contact Detective Charoudis Dimos or submit tips through the SaferWatch app. Additionally, Broward Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for any information leading to an arrest, underlining the urgency and gravity of pursuing justice in this unsettling case.

The community of Cooper City remains shaken by the callous attack on its local wildlife. As investigations continue, the emphasis on identifying and apprehending those responsible grows stronger, with law enforcement agencies relying on community support. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the destructive capabilities within society and the importance of safeguarding all forms of life.
