In an unexpected yet positive turn of events, Jacksonville experienced a notable reduction in homicide rates in 2024. The city reported just 82 homicides, a striking near 50% decrease compared to the previous year, marking the lowest number in nearly two decades.
This significant drop from 158 homicides in 2023 highlights a shift in Jacksonville’s fight against violence. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office attributes this progress to targeted interventions, particularly a focus on group violence intervention. Their approach involved doubling the size of the gang unit, increasing patrols, and implementing advanced technology to aid in both solving and preventing crimes.
The Sheriff’s Office’s emphasis on technology has been particularly impactful. The installation of cameras and plate readers connected to the Real-Time Crime Center and enhanced forensics through the Crime Gun Intelligence Center have played a crucial role in these efforts. Sheriff T.K. Waters emphasized, “It makes me feel like we’re doing what the citizens put us here to do, which is take care of the city and make sure people are safe.”
Despite the overall decline, the year was marked by spikes in violence, particularly in March, May, and October, with notable incidents such as the homicide of off-duty corrections officer Brad McNew during an altercation at a gas station. Areas like Jacksonville’s Northside and Westside saw pockets of violence, although even the infamously troubled 32209 ZIP code experienced a 65% reduction in homicides.
While the reduction in homicides is promising, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office acknowledges the continued need for public cooperation to resolve unsolved cases. To date, about 60% of last year’s homicides have been solved, leaving significant unresolved cases, such as the murder of Gary Mills, still seeking closure.
