A troubling incident has rocked the community of Cooper City, Florida, as a local resident reports a shocking act of cruelty involving several juveniles on all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). According to eyewitness Brian Schafler, dozens of ducks and geese were intentionally run over near his home by these individuals.
Schafler shared his disturbing experience with reporters, describing the scene as a ‘bird massacre.’ He recorded a video on his cellphone capturing the aftermath in a field behind his neighborhood. According to Schafler, the individuals on ATVs were seen laughing and making multiple passes, crushing the birds under their vehicles.
The incident occurred near Southwest 49th Street and 120th Avenue, where Schafler claims about 100 geese reside. He expressed that the act was intentional, recounting how the juveniles came back repeatedly to harm the birds.
Visibly distressed, Schafler contacted the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. In his video, he is heard lamenting as he surveys the damage: ‘They’re all over, all dead. This is horrible.’ He then gathered the deceased birds into his truck, taking them to a local sheriff’s station as evidence.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office responded, confirming they canvassed the area, but the investigation into the incident’s circumstances continues. As of the latest reports, it is unclear if any charges will be pressed against those responsible.
Schafler expressed his hope for accountability, urging local authorities to consider implementing barriers to prevent future incidents. Highlighting the area’s rich wildlife, he underlined the need for protective measures.
He commented on the cruelty of the act, emphasizing the needless suffering inflicted on the animals. Despite his frustration, Schafler remains hopeful for a resolution that will deter similar actions going forward.
The incident remains under investigation, with authorities yet to determine the appropriate legal actions to be taken. The local community is urged to remain vigilant and report any further incidents that threaten wildlife in the area. Those with information can contact Broward County Crime Stoppers anonymously.
