Kolkata Authorities Heighten Security Across City Following Delhi Car Bombing

Kolkata authorities have implemented a comprehensive security sweep across the city, significantly increasing vigilance at transport hubs, public spaces, and major venues in response to a car bomb explosion in Delhi on Monday. The city has been placed on high alert, with law enforcement agencies focusing on preventative measures to ensure public safety.

Kolkata Police have issued directives to all stations and traffic guards to conduct thorough vehicle checks, remove illegally parked cars, and maintain a special watch for abandoned vehicles on roads and in public areas. Officials have also been instructed to ensure areas under bridges are clear of unauthorized parking and that hotels enforce the use of parking stickers.

Security has been notably bolstered at key transportation centers. Special vigils are underway in the parking lots of Calcutta airport and the Howrah and Sealdah railway stations. A senior Railway Protection Force officer confirmed that the stations are on the highest alert, citing Bengal’s status as a border state and the upcoming elections as pre-existing factors for heightened security. At the airport, Quick Response Teams (QRT) are intensifying patrols, and officials are conducting multiple checks on passengers and baggage.

In addition to transport infrastructure, security arrangements have been enhanced for the upcoming India-South Africa Test match scheduled at Eden Gardens. Following a security meeting, it was decided to strengthen security at all vital installations near the stadium and at major intersections leading to the venue. The city’s Metro system has also increased its security protocols, with a focus on ensuring all baggage is scanned across its various lines.
