In a recent incident that has shocked the Lake Wales community, a middle school teacher has been arrested following accusations of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and assaulting her new boyfriend.
Polk County deputies have confirmed the arrest of 51-year-old Thomas Griffin, a teacher at McLaughlin Middle School, who is now facing several charges, including burglary and strangulation. The unsettling event unfolded on a Saturday night when Griffin allegedly banged on the door of his ex-girlfriend’s home, demanding to confront her current partner.
According to statements from those involved, Griffin’s confrontation quickly escalated. When the new boyfriend attempted to reason with him, Griffin reportedly forced his way inside and launched a violent attack. The ex-girlfriend, who was present during the incident, described witnessing Griffin repeatedly hitting her boyfriend. Despite her efforts to intervene, she was unable to stop the assault.
Deputies interviewed the victim at a hospital where he was treated for injuries. He recounted how Griffin choked him, obstructing his breathing, and punched him, causing significant facial injuries, including a knocked-out tooth. The deputies reported visible injuries on the victim’s face, arms, and neck.
The altercation reportedly ended when Griffin fled the scene. The authorities managed to locate and arrest him the following Tuesday. Currently, he faces charges of burglary with assault, false imprisonment, and battery by strangulation.
Sheriff Grady Judd commented on the case, emphasizing the gravity of Griffin’s actions and the breach of trust involved, particularly given his role as an educator. Sheriff Judd remarked, “The suspect forced his way into the home and violently attacked the victim. As a teacher, hopefully a former teacher, Griffin holds a position of trust in our community—a trust that has been severely broken. School students should not be exposed to this kind of potential volatile behavior.”
The presence of the woman’s child in the home during the incident has added to the community’s concerns, although fortunately, neither the child nor the woman sustained any injuries. In response to these events, the Polk County Public Schools system has placed Griffin on administrative leave pending further investigation.
The accusations against Thomas Griffin have raised significant concerns within the Lake Wales community, particularly regarding the responsibilities and conduct expected of educators. As the investigation unfolds, many are looking to law enforcement and the educational system for reassurance and action to prevent similar incidents in the future.
