Greg Gumbel, a distinguished sportscaster known for his extensive career with CBS, has passed away at the age of 78 due to cancer, as confirmed by his family’s statement released by CBS.
Gumbel’s career spanned over five decades, during which he became a beloved and influential figure in sports broadcasting. His journey in the industry began before he rose to prominence as the studio host for CBS after returning from NBC in 1998. He was especially well-regarded for his role in CBS’s coverage of major sporting events, including the men’s NCAA Tournament and March Madness.
In 2001, Gumbel made history by becoming the first Black announcer in the U.S. to deliver play-by-play commentary for a major sports championship, Super Bowl XXXV. This achievement cemented his status as a trailblazer in the field, inspiring future generations of broadcasters.
Beyond football, Gumbel also contributed to CBS’s coverage of the Winter Olympics in 1992 and 1994 and Major League Baseball. His versatility and deep understanding of various sports made him a trusted voice for fans across the nation.
David Berson, President and CEO of CBS Sports, praised Gumbel’s career, emphasizing his role as a barrier-breaking broadcaster and a skilled storyteller. Berson noted that Gumbel’s contributions set standards for others in the industry, particularly in his work with the NFL and college basketball.
Gumbel’s impact extended beyond the screen. His legacy is marked by his dedication to his craft and the inspiration he provided to others in sports media. His wife, Marcy, and daughter, Michelle, expressed their grief and admiration for his enduring legacy, highlighting the love and inspiration he brought to his profession.
Unfortunately, earlier this year, Gumbel was unable to attend his first NCAA Tournament since 1997 due to family health issues, which he later revealed were related to his battle with cancer. Despite signing a contract extension with CBS last year, which allowed him to continue hosting despite stepping back from other duties, his career was inevitably affected by his health challenges.
Greg Gumbel’s passing marks the end of a remarkable era in sports broadcasting. His unique voice and innovative approach left an indelible mark on the industry. As his colleagues and fans mourn his loss, they also celebrate the extraordinary contributions he made to sports journalism.
