Man Arrested for Assaulting Teen Outside Coral Springs Mall

A 33-year-old man from Coral Springs has been arrested on multiple felony charges following an alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl. The incident occurred in the parking lot of Coral Square mall, highlighting serious concerns over public safety.

On Monday, Coral Springs police took into custody Hosea Smith Jr., charging him with serious crimes, including sexual battery and lewd molestation. Smith, who is a registered Violent Felony Offender of Special Concern, was reportedly out on probation for previous offenses, including burglary and grand theft, and was not authorized to leave his home on Ramblewood Drive.

According to the arrest report, the young victim was passing through the mall parking lot after failing to enter a nearby theater. Her path crossed with Smith, who was in the company of a woman and a child. Initially, the girl continued her way while listening to music, but her attention was drawn when she noticed Smith following her.

Following an unsettling exchange, where Smith complimented her appearance and disregarded the presence of his companions, the situation quickly escalated. Smith exposed himself and attempted to force the girl into nonconsensual contact, as evidenced by her detailed account to the authorities.

Displaying commendable courage, the girl resisted Smith’s advances, despite him attempting to forcibly disrobe her. In the process, Smith also appropriated her phone, calling his number from it to secure her contact information. The struggle left the victim visibly shaken, yet she sought help from friends, launching a confrontation with Smith over the phone shortly after the attack.

The police, conducting surveillance, apprehended Smith the following day as he traveled with his family. He now faces multiple charges, including violating the terms of his probation, solidifying the legal ramifications of his actions. As of Tuesday, Smith remains detained without the option for bail at the Broward Main Jail.

This incident not only underlines the dangers that can arise in seemingly safe public spaces but also raises questions about the adequacy of monitoring systems for individuals on probation. The swift actions of law enforcement and the bravery of the victim and her friends were crucial in bringing this case to light, with the judicial process now set to follow.
