McRae investigated the sound of breaking glass and encountered two masked men attempting to enter the home. Prosecutors stated that McRae shouted at the intruders before retreating to the bedroom where Taylor-Joy was located. The couple locked the door, and McRae instructed Taylor-Joy to hide behind the bed.
