Memorial Set Up for 14-Year-Old in Southwest Miami-Dade

In a poignant tribute, friends and teammates of 14-year-old Lazaro Martinez gathered to commemorate his life with a memorial in Southwest Miami-Dade after he tragically lost his life trying to cross a street.

Lazaro Martinez’s untimely death has left a void in the community, as friends and family remember him as a talented athlete and a beloved friend. The makeshift memorial, which was captured by news cameras, stands as a testament to the impact he had on those around him.

Martinez was struck by a black Audi while walking home on Southwest 112th Avenue near 232nd Street. The Florida Highway Patrol reports that the incident occurred on a Tuesday evening. Notably, his 8-year-old cousin was present and witnessed the accident, adding another layer of tragedy to the event.

Kendrick Pruitt, a friend and teammate, expressed his grief, saying, ‘He was one of my best friends. I miss him, man.’ Martinez is remembered not only for his skills on the football field but also for his vibrant and positive personality. ‘He always laughed; every time we see him, he was laughing,’ recalled Kenyon Pruitt.

A good Samaritan recounted her attempts to assist Martinez immediately after the accident. She described stopping her car in the middle of traffic to help, but unfortunately, it was too late. Her account sheds light on the desperate moments following the collision.

The driver involved in the accident remained at the scene, and authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Jordan Robinson, another friend, lamented the loss akin to losing a brother, emphasizing the bond forged on the football field.

In light of the tragedy, community members and football parents are calling for increased caution on the busy roads. Kathy Pruitt expressed the emotional toll of the event, highlighting the natural order of children outliving parents.

As a gesture of remembrance, Martinez’s teammates plan to retire his jersey number, 12. The memorial serves as a physical reminder of a life ended too soon, resonating with those who knew and loved him.
