Miami-Dade County is in the midst of a significant decision regarding the location of a new incinerator. Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has recommended maintaining the incinerator’s site in Doral, despite initial controversies and alternative suggestions.
In a memo to county commissioners, Mayor Levine Cava expressed her backing for placing the new incinerator at the existing Doral location, which experienced a fire incident in February 2023. This recommendation considers the financial implications involved in relocating the incinerator. “Our priority is to build a facility that is safe for people and the environment, integrates seamlessly into the community, includes our zero waste initiative, and does not create an undue burden for our ratepayers,” Levine Cava stated in her memo.
The examination of various potential sites, which included the old Opa-Locka West Airport near Miramar, revealed significant cost concerns associated with moving the incinerator. Consequently, the mayor advocated for establishing the new Solid Waste Campus at the Doral site to mitigate these expenses. Despite acknowledging the difficulty of the decision, Levine Cava remains assured that this choice serves the best interests of the community, environment, and financial stewards.
Miramar’s Mayor, Wayne Messam, has responded to the recommendation, voicing cautious support. He praised Mayor Levine Cava for her openness to various perspectives and updating her position based on new information. Messam emphasized the continued vigilance of Miramar in ensuring health and safety are prioritized, noting, “Until a formal vote is taken or the incinerator is rejected altogether, the City of Miramar remains at risk if Mayor Levine Cava’s recommendation is not voted on affirmatively.”
The decision now rests with the Miami-Dade commissioners, who are slated to vote next month. Messam and Miramar residents have articulated concerns about potential health and environmental effects if an incinerator is installed close to their city. They anticipate that the commissioners will align with the mayor’s proposal to safeguard community welfare.
Meanwhile, the county has yet to receive feedback from the city of Doral. The ongoing discussions reflect various stakeholders’ commitment to sustainability and risk reduction while ensuring efficient waste management solutions for the region.
The forthcoming vote by Miami-Dade commissioners will be a pivotal moment in resolving the incinerator’s placement. The decision will balance cost, community impact, and environmental safety, influencing future waste management approaches in the area.
