Moncrief Road Improvement Project Receives Significant Funding

A long-anticipated improvement project for Moncrief Road in Northwest Jacksonville is set to proceed, thanks to a notable financial boost.

The Moncrief Road Beautification Project, aimed at enhancing a particularly perilous 10-block area, has secured $2.5 million in funding through newly filed legislation. This initiative falls under the city’s Capital Improvement Plan and is designed to address safety and aesthetic concerns between 34th and 45th Street.

Residents, like Craig Fuce, who have witnessed numerous close calls, have long voiced concern over the road’s safety conditions. “You’ve got kids just crossing the street and traffic that is just flowing back and forth,” Fuce mentioned, underscoring the urgent need for improvements.

A key feature of this project is the planned installation of a roundabout at the intersection of Moncrief Road and 45th Street. Laurie Santana, Jacksonville’s Chief of Transportation Planning, has detailed additional enhancements including road resurfacing, new crosswalks, and a multi-use path for both bicyclists and pedestrians, along with improved lighting.

Councilwoman Ju’Coby Pittman, a persistent advocate for the project since 2018, expresses optimism about the impending changes. She emphasized the dual focus on safety and beautification, noting that these efforts address long-standing unmet promises to District 10 residents. “If we can take the opportunity and really clean up this area as well as visually make it aesthetically beautiful, with landscaping and historic lighting, we want the same things other communities want,” she stated.

Construction is slated to begin in early 2026 and is expected to conclude by late 2027 or early 2028. This timeline allows ample opportunity for the community to prepare for the upcoming transformations and participate in the progress of the project.

The Moncrief Road Beautification Project represents a significant investment in community safety and quality of life, promising to address pressing concerns while setting a precedent for future improvements across Jacksonville.
