A tragic accident occurred on U.S. 17 near DeLeon Springs when a pickup truck turned into the path of a southbound motorcycle, resulting in the death of two riders.

The incident took place at 9:18 p.m. on Sunday at the intersection of U.S. 17 and Lake Winona Road. According to Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Migdalisis Garcia, a 57-year-old man from Holly Hill and a 53-year-old woman from Jacksonville were traveling southbound on U.S. 17 on a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

The crash happened when a Dodge Ram 1500, driven by a 46-year-old woman from Crystal River, made a left turn into the motorcycle’s path. The driver of the pickup truck failed to yield, leading to a collision.

Tragically, the man from Holly Hill died at the scene. The Jacksonville woman was rushed to Halifax Health Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead. The driver and an 11-year-old passenger from Crystal River were not injured in the accident and remained at the scene during the investigation.

As authorities continue to investigate the tragic crash, questions regarding road safety and driver awareness remain pertinent. The failure to yield right of way is a critical factor in many traffic incidents, highlighting the need for ongoing public awareness and education.
